Belski’s Blog – 7.8 earthquake in Alaska
Just off the Aleutian coast
Updated Wednesday morning, July 22……A very strong 7.8 earthquake hit just off the Aleutian coast of Alaska at 2:13 AM EDT.The map below shows reports of how far away it was felt and that included the Anchorage area. With a quake this size there is always concern about a tsunami. A warning was issued for parts of the Alaska coast. At Homer, Alaska the sirens sounded the tsunami warning and you can see the line of cars heading for higher ground. The good news is the quake was 17 miles deep so there was only a small tsunami. If it would have been a mile deep or less, there would have been a major tsunami, possibly all the way down the U.S. west coast. As it was, there was some rise is the water level near the quake, but nothing bad and the warning was canceled within 2 hours. The tsunami was only about a foot high.Seismographs from across the U.S. picked up on the quake. No damage has been reported in Alaska.Aftershocks continue at this time. The 2 strongest ones were 5.8 and 5.4.
